article.

security and trying to be hired.
4.
Identify points of view and/or values discussed (as much as possible).
- The author talks about reforms under consideration that involve creating
incentives to encourage older workers to stay in the labor force longer. Sarah
Hyde highlights these plans from this strategy that include (1) reducing benefits
for those who receive claims at 62, (2) further increasing the full retirement age,
and (3) reducing taxes on earnings after Social Security benefits are claimed.
Studies showed that younger female applicants had a higher callback rate than
middle-aged female applicants, and older female applicants had the lowest
callback rate. The study also found a small difference in the amount of older men
that were called back as opposed to younger men.
5.

- The larger issue is that the researchers found evidence of age discrimination in
hiring, which in turn, is demanding change in social security reform.
6.
What is your personal reaction to the article?
- I found this article interesting because I had never thought of there being a
discrimination in age when trying to claim benefits.
Article B:
1.
Who wrote the article?
- Judie Svihula and Carroll L. Estes are the authors of this article.
2.
Where was it published?
- The article was published in
The Journals of Gerontology: Series B
.
3.
Clearly state the issue the article addresses.
- The article addresses the issue of different ideologies and reform, for social
security, in different political parties.
4.
Identify points of view and/or values discussed (as much as possible).
- The authors discuss that economic and social values are what drives the Social
Security Reform. They also recognize that ideologies are an essential part as well.
The researchers were able to find that the market values oppose the structure and
principles of Social Security and are different to public attitudes supporting Social
Security. The social contract values behind the current structure of Social Security
emphasize citizens’ financial security, a responsible government, and mutual
protection based on shared risk. The researcher’s findings suggest that the
dominant ideology expressed is a product of a conservative Republican majority
in Congress and reflects a growing conservatism in the Democratic Congress
(Svihula & Estes, 2007).
5.
What’s the larger issue or policy the article addresses?
- The larger issue discussed is that Social Security was once seen as a good way to
help with poverty that result from retirement, disability, and beneficiary death
among all age groups. However, there has been an increase in the population of
older people that has called for a reform of the social security program.
6. What is your personal reaction to the article?
- I think that it’s interesting, but not surprising, that the population in older people
is rising. This doesn’t surprise me because there was a large baby boom that
increased the population in the U.S.
