sociology discussions 1

First Discussion

In this week’s Strayer Story, you learned about the importance of BBQ culture for Leslie Roark Scott and her family. For Leslie Roark, BBQ is an important cultural artifact. Cultural artifacts are the things that make up a society’s material culture. Some examples of cultural artifacts are tools, food, clothing, and books. Think about your own culture and some of the artifacts (material objects) that are part of it. Choose one of the following artifacts:

  • Food
  • Music
  • Clothing

Describe why you chose it and how it helps you feel connected to your own culture.

Second Discussion

Defining racism

According to the WebText, racism refers to “the belief that certain racial or ethnic groups are inferior to one or more other groups.” To most people, this definition is largely insufficient to explain this complicated concept!

  • Some sociologists argue that POWER should play a role in a definition of racism. Would you agree or disagree? Why?
  • What other factors, besides power, do you think are important to consider when discussing a definition of racism?
  • Think about your family and upbringing. Think about your peer group, your education, and your life circumstances. Think about the experiences you have had AND those you have not had. What factors have impacted your perspective on racism and HOW have these factors impacted your perspective?

Water cleanses our system, hydrates our body, and helps grow plants. Water plays a vital role in many life forms. In the given image, shows how the U.S dominated the world over the use of water per person. Reflecting on the image, it gathers so much sadness and empathy that many people are not getting enough water each day. Many people especially in Mali, West Africa are deprived of not having enough water that other countries like the United States have abundant. Some people misuse water and they do not see the value of it. Imagine a child that is not getting an adequate amount of water? They are likely prone to many diseases, they are most likely dehydrated, they are a risk for infections, and they are delirium. We happen to be living in a country that has enough supply of water for each person and our access to clean water makes us healthy. Oftentimes we see infographics similar to this that catch our attention. That being said, this information is intended for the general public all over the world that has access to the CDC website. It is a great reminder that water is not to waste. Although the data seems to be inaccurate, it does not mean that we overuse water, it tells us that we should use water wisely. Because our one day of use is equal to almost two months for them.

Comment 2

I found this infographic very interesting because the number of gallons that the average US person uses per day was astounding. We as US citizens are blessed to have the access to use copious amounts of water for our everyday lives. I have not been to these other countries to know how critical it is to have water. I believe that we as a country are taking the water situation, we have for granted. I personally take very quick showers as I learned at a very young age even though I lived in apartment where we don’t have to pay for water. I found it very interesting that Mali only uses 3 gallons per day for the average person. I believe this would be nearly impossible for the average person to do so in the US. I personally drink almost a gallon of water a day and to think people in Mali only use 3 gallons per day is astounding.

Instructions for Your Country Selection:

Select three (3) countries that interest you and submit them to your professor. Your professor will give you an approval for one of the countries you selected. This will be “Your Country” – you’ll work on for the rest of the term.

Before you begin your Global Marketing Journal, you need an approval for the Country you selected. If you work on a country without my approval, you’ll be penalized.

Post your selections and I will let you know which one you’re approved to use for your Global Marketing Journal Project.

Let me know if you have any questions.

  • Fully illustrates and clearly explains the marketing concept
  • Fully illustrates and clearly connects marketing concept to product
  • Fully structures and clearly organizes post
  • Shows mastery in grammar / spelling (think 0 or 1 error)

Post 2
You are planning a trip for peers to “Your Country.” They want it to be a true representation of the people and culture there so it should involve various things unique to “Your Country”. Based on your research propose two options for each category. Your peers will review your proposed options and indicate their preferences. You will then create the final trip.

Use a table to present your options. The table should look something similar to the one below. Fill it in with very short description of each option – enough for someone to understand what you are proposing. It is probably easiest to complete your table in Word and then upload the Word document.

Also include information regarding a round-trip airplane ticket from Atlanta, Georgia to the capital of “Your Country”. This information should include the ticket price and the number of hours to get there for one of the shorter flights.

essay 5 pages 6

Essay #2

A psychologist receives a call from an attorney wishing to seek services for depression, anxiety and substance abuse. The psychologist screens the potential patient and she believes that she can help him. When she asks about insurance, he indicates that he will use cash payments. The psychologist explains the fee structure for the initial appointment as well as ongoing psychotherapy sessions. The lawyer-patient comments that this seems low.The psychologist ignores the comment and finishes by setting their initial appointment.

The psychologist and the attorney-patient meet for the initial session. At the end of the session, the psychologist asks for the requisite fee as stated on the phone. The attorney-patient indicates that he earns about 2.5 times what the psychologist asked. He indicates that, in order for him to benefit from the treatment, he feels a need to pay what he makes an hour.He also states that if she does not accept what he is offering, he will lose respect for her as a professional and probably not return for treatment.

Not knowing what to do, the psychologist takes the cash and sets up another appointment. At the end of the day, the psychologist reflects on the interaction between she and her new lawyer-patient.She does not feel right taking a fee larger than her usual and customary rate. She is struggling that the situation is not right and feels very uneasy about the arrangement that the lawyer-patient foisted upon her.

Uncertain, she calls you for an ethics consultation.

What are the ethical issues, if any, involved in this case?

What would be your emotional response to this situation?

What factors make this situation potentially difficult for you as a psychologist?

What factors make this situation potentially easy for you as a psychologist?

What do you believe is the best course of action?
