Please respond with a paragraph to the following post, add citations and references:

  1. Imagine that a family friend or colleague has just been diagnosed with cancer. Explain how the American Cancer Society might provide education and support. What ACS services would you recommend and why?

The American Cancer Society (ACS) is a large and nationwide organization that has many years of experience in researching, diagnosing, and treatment of cancer and its causative factors. Some of these resources the ACS offers are based on helping individuals understand what is their disease process and how to come to terms with it. Other resources include finding appropriate treatments and funding for those treatments, understanding health changes with the disease and its treatment, support for family and caregivers, and ultimately guidance on end-of-life care if the disease proves to be overwhelming. The ACS can provide these services by partnering with local cancer treatment and research centers to inform patients and provide on-going care.

If a colleague or family friend was newly diagnosed with cancer, I would recommend that they logon to the ACS website and print out their Personal Health Manager file to begin a centralized and organized record of their journey with cancer. Most people believe that cancer is a death sentence but with early detection and appropriate treatment, remission is possible. Another recommendation would include focus on finding local resources and community groups that would help ease the financial burden and isolation that the new diagnosis can bring on. Speaking to people who have survived or are going through treatment successfully can positively impact them and motivate them to keep moving forward towards successful treatment.

  1. According to statistics published by the American Cancer Society, there will be an estimated 1.5 million new cancer cases diagnosed each year over the next decade. What factors contribute to the yearly incidence and mortality rates of various cancers in Americans? What changes in policy and practice are most likely to affect these figures over time.

Many individuals have a higher risk for cancer than others due to specific gene expressions of their DNA. Although the risk is higher, many of the factors that are attributed to breast cancer are often cause by the environment they live rather than his / her innate biology (American Cancer Society, n.d.). Many of these risk factors include tobacco, infections, body composition, diet, and radiation exposure. For specific incidence, tobacco has been linked to over 16 different types of cancer including lung, mouth, and throat cancer. For some, environmental pollutants including asbestos, mineral oils, diesel engine exhaust, lead, welding, and even shift work have led to an increased risk and incidence for cancer. For decreased incidence, federal law provides life-saving programs for prevention and coverage of cancer with early detection services (“Strong prevention,” 2017). Policies in insurance carrier plans must include provisions for preventative services and vaccines such as Gardasil that helps prevent cancer from viruses in the human papilloma virus (HPV) family.

  1. Select a research program from among those funded by the American Cancer Society. Describe the program and discuss what impact the research will have on the prevention or treatment of cancer.

The American cancer society funds a program that is designed to help those that are at higher risk due to income or ethnicity become less at risk. This program is known as the Cancer Health Disparities Research campaign and focuses on differences due to factors like poverty and lack of access to prevention/detection services as well as to high-quality treatment (American Cancer Society, n.d.). Although the ACS is not specifically working on this research, they work closely with medical schools, universities, and research institutes to help fund their work and through a rigorous peer-review process are able to identify key data that will decrease the disparity many lower income and less insured individuals face. The impact of this program is designed to facilitate the early discovery of cancer and initiate early treatment for improved outcomes.
