Intra-Annual Productivity

Part B of the exercise on ocean productivity again examines data from the SeaWiFS website (https://oceancolor.gsfc.nasa.gov/cgi/l3?sen=S&per=…) that presents color-coded global maps representing ocean characteristics including chlorophyll levels. Here, the focus is on intra-annual variations that can be displayed using the third pull-down menu and selecting “Monthly climatology”, which displays twelve maps representing individual months.

Hence, for the questions below:

Select SeaWiFS Chlorophyll Concentration, OCI Algorithm

Select “Monthly climatology” from the third pull-down menu

Click the thumbnail for each month to view full scale, expanded maps for that month as composite records for the entire data set (1997 to 2010).

Question 1 5 pts

From examination of the global maps of seasonal productivity identify a specific region of the Atlantic Ocean that exhibits pronounced changes in productivity over an annual cycle as represented by the monthly images. For your answer describe your chosen location (e.g. western equatorial Atlantic ocean) of the area of productivity change specifying the levels (monthly values for chlorophyll a concentrations in mg/m3) observed during an annual cycle, and explaining why strong intra-annual changes in productivity occur in this region of the Atlantic.

A strong answer will designate the region in the Atlantic that exhibits intra-annual changes in ocean color accurately, specifying its location (ocean region) and values for monthly concentrations of chlorophyll a, and associating these observations with discussion of the specific oceanographic factors (e.g. intra-annual changes in land run-off, upwelling, downwelling, or light & nutrient availability) that result in the intra-annual variations in productivity.

Question 2 5 pts

From examination of the global maps of monthly productivity identify a specific region of the Atlantic Ocean that exhibits minimal changes in productivity over an annual cycle. For your answer describe your chosen location (e.g. western equatorial Atlantic ocean) of the area of where there are minimal intra-annual changes in productivity specifying the productivity levels (monthly values for chlorophyll a concentrations in mg/m3) representative of the intra-annual changes, and explaining why minimal intra-annual changes in productivity occur in this region of the Atlantic.

A strong answer will designate the region in the Atlantic that exhibits minimal intra-annual changes in ocean color accurately, specifying its location (ocean region) and values for monthly concentrations of chlorophyll a, and associating these observations of a lack of intra-annual change in productivity levels with discussion of the specific oceanographic factors (e.g. absence of significant intra-annual changes in land run-off, upwelling, downwelling, or light & nutrient availability) that result in the minimal intra-annual variations in productivity.

Question 3 5 pts

From examination of the global maps of monthly productivity identify a specific region of the Pacific Ocean that exhibits pronounced changes in productivity over an annual cycle as represented by the monthly images. For your answer describe your chosen location (e.g. western equatorial Pacific Ocean) of the area of productivity change specifying the levels (monthly values for chlorophyll a concentrations in mg/m3) observed during an annual cycle, and explaining why strong intra-annual changes in productivity occur in this region of the Pacific.

A strong answer will designate the region in the Pacific that exhibits intra-annual changes in ocean color accurately, specifying its location (ocean region) and values for monthly concentrations of chlorophyll a, and associating these observations with discussion of the specific oceanographic factors (e.g. intra-annual changes in land run-off, upwelling, downwelling, or light & nutrient availability) that result in the intra-annual variations in productivity.

Question 4 5 pts

From examination of the global maps of monthly productivity identify a specific region of the Indian Ocean that exhibits pronounced changes in productivity over an annual cycle as represented by the monthly images. For your answer describe your chosen location (e.g. western Indian Ocean) of the area of productivity change specifying the levels (monthly values for chlorophyll a concentrations in mg/m3) observed during an annual cycle, and explaining why strong intra-annual changes in productivity occur in this region of the Indian Ocean.

A strong answer will designate the region in the Indian Ocean that exhibits intra-annual changes in ocean color accurately, specifying its location (ocean region) and values for monthly concentrations of chlorophyll a, and associating these observations with discussion of the specific oceanographic factors (e.g. intra-annual changes in land run-off, upwelling, downwelling, or light & nutrient availability) that result in the intra-annual variations in productivity.
